This meeting of the Christianity Seminar Phase II (Spring 2023) explores the intersection of authorship and authority in emerging Christianity. How were early Christian leaders fashioned as authoritative? How were audiences conditioned to think about the purpose of early Christian communities? Applying recent scholarship on ancient rhetoric, philosophy, and pedagogy, this meeting of the seminar seeks to uncover how various rhetorical methods were deployed to persuade, teach, entertain, and mimic diverse authorial perspectives. This session challenges traditional ideas about texts being conveyors of “doctrine” rather than examples of Christian rhetorical performance.
